About the book:
In post-apocalyptic America, where scattered rusted metal lines the shore, animals are tainted with poisonous radiation, and debris from the once-great city coats the ground, Selah Chavez hides in the shoreline's long grass, determined to catch a Lander. These mysterious Landers are people from a land across the big water who survive the delirium-inducing passage in small boats. She knows she should leave the capture to the men, but Landers bring a good price from the Company -- especially the ones who keep their markings.
Selah catches her first Lander, but her brothers steal him and leave her behind. When Selah wakes the next morning, she is horrified to find the Lander's mark permanently etched in her skin. She must find the only person who can help her -- Bodhi Locke, the Lander her brothers are about to sell.
With evocative descriptions of a strange new world that combines elements of scientific advances, political intrigue, and wilderness survival, Bonnie S. Calhoun weaves a captivating tale of a world more like our own than we may want to admit.

What I thought:
This is one of those books that once picked up and you begin
reading it, you have a really hard
time putting it down. The nonstop adventure and sudden twists are enough to
keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning, all the while thinking to
yourself, just one more page.
Thunder, Book 1 of the Stone Braide Chronicles, is a
fast-paced and highly enjoyable read that I would not hesitate to let my teens
read. There are some suggestive moments of kissing and brief hand holding between
Selah and Bodhi but nothing more than would be found in even the most family
friendly TV shows or films today. There is some shooting and death but the
violence is really kept to a minimum.I loved the descriptiveness of the world in which Selah and the other characters live. Bonnie Calhoun really does a great job of painting the scenes in your mind, making it easy to lose yourself in their world. I look forward to the next book in this series!!
432 pages in length, this hardcover book will be available in stores October, 2014 or you can pre-order now for $16.99. While this young adult book is technically recommended for ages 12-17, I enjoyed it very much as a thirty-something!! If you or your teens are looking for a new adventure series to start, this is a great choice!

I like to read a variety of genres although right now I prefer Christian fiction or suspense!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is mysteries, but I also enjoy historical fiction and regular fiction. I've been reviewing a lot of Christian love stories lately, and Amish fiction. Favorite authors include Janet Evanovich, Diana Gabaldon and Sandra Boynton. ;)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy young adult books most, but also love historical fiction. I teach 6th grade language arts and like to share books with my students.
