3P Learning offers several online learning resources, we
were given the opportunity to review one them, Mathletics. Mathletics is a
worldwide e-curriculum, customizable for children grades K-12. It is used by
over 3.5 million kids all over the world and is quickly growing! Honestly, I’m
surprised I hadn’t heard of it before we were given the review. Both my 10th
grader and 6th grader worked with Mathletics several times a week.
The program is available for $59 per student, per year.
As the parent / teacher you have the option of choosing what
grade level your child starts at but you can change it at any time if you find
it isn’t a good fit. Oscar (10th grader) really liked the fact that
he could challenge kids from around the world to different real-time games. I
would hear him in the school room while I was in the kitchen, “Man, these New
Zealand kids are fast!” Because Oscar has struggled with math, I started him at
about the 7th grade level. Somewhere, somehow gaps have crept into
his mathematical learning and he really began struggling with his Algebra last
year. I started him at a lower grade level for two reasons: 1. to build his
confidence in math 2. to hopefully find and fill in those learning gaps.
We began the review period before we began our 2014-2015
school year, so at first he was using the Mathletics about 30-45 minutes a day,
four days (give or take) a week. He enjoyed the program so much that without being
asked, he would wake up, get breakfast and log in to Mathletics! Honestly, the
program has made a huge difference in both his math confidence and his
abilities. We officially started our 2014-2015 school year at the end of July.
My requirements for Oscar’s high school math is that he work an hour a day-
five days a week. He’s doing geometry this year and whatever time is left after
his lessons, he fills with Mathletics. He sees it as a fun game time. He’s been
doing his geometry without problems all year. I still don’t know where or what
those learning gaps were in his math but Mathletics has found and filled them!!
He confidently tackles his geometry each day and is doing quite well!
Julia, my 6th grader is working on pre-algebra
this year. I set her Mathletics settings also at about the 7th grade
level. She excelled (as I figured she would) with the program. She also enjoyed
it and would ask at random times during the day to log in and do some math. She’s
my advanced student, so to have a program that moves as quickly as she does
without holding her back is great. Both kids still use the program and will
continue to as long as we have access!
Some cool things about the program
- Mathletics is available on several different devices, including PC, Mac, tablets (both Android and iPad) and smart phones (Android, iPhone, Samsung and Amazon).
- You (the teacher / parent) get a weekly update on your child’s progress including test taken, scores for everything, strengths and potential weaknesses.
- Mathletics is used and trusted by more than 10,000 schools worldwide!
- If you aren't sure you want to make the leap and pay for a full year, you can get full access to the site with a 10-day free trial
- Complete workbooks are available for download and printing, if the kids need extra practice with something. They include every stage of mathematics and include both the student books with the problems and teacher books with the answers. We did use these a couple times but because I was almost out of ink at the time (perpetual problem of a homeschool mom!) I couldn't print as much as I would have liked.
My bottom line
Mathletics is a fantastic program whether it’s being used
for struggling or advanced students. It works with the kids on their level,
where they need the help. With such an affordable price, this curriculum is definitely attainable for the average homeschool family. This is one product that both the kids and I agree on, it's great! Thanks you 3P Learning for this opportunity!
