ScienceandMath.com ~ Algebra 1 Review

ScienceandMath.com Review

Since fifth grade, my son (now 15 and in high school) has struggled with math. Somewhere between the fancy mathematical lingo and the hurried public school environment gaps were created. It was at the point where he was going into seventh grade with failing math scores that we started homeschooling.

I have tried a lot of different curriculum to no avail. HOWEVER!! I was recently given a DVD copy of ScienceandMath.com 's Algebra 1: Volume 1 to review. This DVD has blessed our socks off. It’s known as a Math Tutor, which means that one person starts at the very beginning of Algebra and breaks down/defines every single math concept that is needed to understand Algebra. I would like to say that the man who teaches the lessons is very conversational, very easy to understand and relates the math concepts to things in everyday life.

My freshman spent a lot of time re-watching the first disk which covers: Real Numbers and their Graphs, Fractions and Exponents / Order of Operations. The first disk really lays the foundation for understanding not only Algebra but math in general. We did eventually move on to disk two, which deals with working with Real Numbers and Algebraic Expressions. He has spent several hours a week both watching the DVDs and doing the worksheets.

I cannot tell you how great it is to see that light bulb come on and a smile spread across his face because he finally figured it out on his own. Those “ah ha!” moments are awesome! He is no longer dreading math every day. Actually, he has been starting his days with this Algebra course lately! I cannot thank MathandScience.com for this Math Tutor. It has filled in the gaps that we have been struggling with for years.
There were a few parts in the DVDs that made him look over at me and say something to the effect of, "Mom... I already know this!". I would make him stick it out and I kid you not, nearly every time he would tell me how the tutor taught him a new, simpler way of doing different equations.
The Algebra 1 Tutor is recommended for seventh grade and up, but I would venture to say that advanced fifth and sixth graders would be capable of understanding. I have an advanced fifth grader and I know beyond a doubt she would understand this curriculum.
This Award Winning three disk DVD set is available for $26.99 on the MathandScience.com website. The DVD set has 10 sections, totaling 7 hours of content. The course is also available to download for $23.99. Worksheets are also available to accompany the DVDs. It always helps to put into practice what you’ve just learned to really cement the new concept in the brain! The Fraction Thru Algebra Companion Worksheet CD is available for $24.99. You also have the option of downloading the Companion Worksheets for $21.99.
Their website also features sample videos and testimonial videos (like 6 year old Jack dividing factions!!)
