Simply Put: A Study In Economics {Review & Double Giveaway}

Economics was never a strong suit for me. I will admit that until recently I could not define capitalism, free market or Adam Smith’s “invisible hand”. Thankfully, I was recently given an opportunity to review a book that would change all that. Honestly, I am amazed at how much I learned and even more surprised at much I retained.

Simply Put: A Study in Economics by Catherine Jamie is a high school course which is designed to fulfill one-half credit. The  Student Book is broken down into 36 lessons. The lessons are short so you could easily do two lessons a week and use this as a one semester curriculum. Or, you  can do just one lesson a week and stretch it to fill the entire year. Don’t let the shortness of the lessons full you, they are packed full of information. The Student book also includes a midterm and final exam, each consist of 30 questions.

About the Author
Catherine Jamie completed her undergraduate work at MIT. She has taught every grade from kindergarten through 12th grade. What could possibly be more impressive than that? Well, to me, she’s a homeschool mom of 12 children and has been homeschooling for over thirty years, that speaks volumes. You can find the other books she has written on her website CatherineJaime.com.

The author has also penned a Teacher Key which contains the answers to the midterm and final exams, a National Budget Activity and a game that can be played with one to thirty students.

On Amazon, the Student Book retails for $19.50, however, right now it is on sale for $17.55. The Teacher Key is listed for $5.95 but currently is on sale for $5.03. These are both physical, soft cover copies of the book. Amazon also offers a Kindle version of the Student Book for $6.99.

Currclick offers a PDF download of both the Student Book and a file which contains the answers to both the exams for $6.99. This download does not include all the resources offered in the Teacher Key.

What did I think?

This course is very well written and will find a spot on our bookshelves in our Charlotte Mason-esque homeschool. Some of the concepts are a bit complex and it moves fast, very fast. Because of the fast pace and meaty subject, I would definitely recommend that this curriculum be used for high schoolers.

While the book is written in Catherine's voice, she uses tons of quotes from people both past and present. Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Margaret Thatcher and of course economists like Adam Smith and Frederick Bastiat are all referenced. Nearly every lesson gives opportunity and direction for outside references and resources. Plus, there are eight appendixes in the back of the book that expound on some key ideas, like a timeline of the Great Depression and some of the great economist's works.

At most you might spend $25 for the set of books. I believe you will find it more than worth it! However, one reader will be able to get the set for free! I am super pleased to say that I am giving away a PDF copy of both the Student Book and Teacher Key via a rafflecopter give away!! Just enter below!
